Overview
The Banner DBA is responsible for the administration, maintenance, performance, security, and availability of the Ellucian Banner Student Information System and its supporting database environments.
The role manages the installation, configuration, upgrading, patching, monitoring, backup, recovery, performance tuning, and security of Banner and associated Oracle and SQL Server databases.
It also supports integrations, access management, disaster recovery, and system availability to ensure the reliable operation of critical institutional applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain the Ellucian Banner Student Information System and its supporting database environments.
- Manage Banner installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, and ongoing system maintenance.
- Administer Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases and support other database platforms where required.
- Monitor database performance and implement improvements through indexing, query optimization, and resource allocation.
- Develop, review, and optimize SQL queries, scripts, stored procedures, and database objects.
- Manage database backup, restoration, recovery, and disaster recovery processes.
- Maintain database security, user roles, access permissions, and data encryption controls.
- Support Banner access management, Ethos Identity Services, ORDS APIs, and integration with other institutional systems.
- Manage database replication, clustering, high-availability solutions, and failover arrangements.
- Support database modelling, schema design, and data integrity requirements.
- Develop automation scripts using Python, PowerShell, or similar tools.
- Support databases hosted on cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Oracle Cloud.
- Investigate and resolve Banner, database, integration, and performance-related issues.
- Maintain technical documentation, configurations, procedures, and operational records.
- Ensure compliance with institutional information security, data governance, and change-management standards.
- Collaborate with application, infrastructure, security, and business teams to support projects and system enhancements.
