Role overview

Thermal System Design Engineer role focused on gas turbine component thermal analysis, secondary-air systems and oil-system design and analysis within turbojet and turbofan development programmes.

The role calls for expertise in heat transfer, fluid mechanics and gas turbine propulsion, as well as project planning and the ability to develop individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Run component thermal-analysis simulations to map engine temperatures.
  • Assess steady and transient thermal and secondary flows in gas turbine components.
  • Size and design oil/lubrication systems, seals, sumps, bearings and pumps.
  • Develop numerical and experimental methods for verification and validation.
  • Support team members, develop junior engineers and provide constructive feedback.
  • Review designs and simulations and prepare testing guidelines.
  • Identify project risks and plan mitigation.

Requirements

  • Degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Strong background in gas turbine propulsion, heat transfer, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
  • Fluent in English; technical expertise in one or a combination of the stated areas.
  • Experience using Ansys Workbench or similar commercial tools.
  • Experience with FEA, CFD or lower-order simulation methods.
  • Experience with 1D flow-network software such as Flomaster or Amesim.
  • Programming experience in C, MATLAB/Simulink or similar.
  • Awareness of current materials, aerodynamics and structural mechanics technologies relevant to gas turbine thermal-system design.
  • Good communication and presentation skills; able to solve problems, prioritise tasks and delegate when necessary.

Relevant technical areas

  • Listed skills include thermal analysis, gas turbine propulsion and project planning.
  • The description identifies Ansys Workbench or similar, FEA, CFD, lower-order simulation methods, Flomaster, Amesim, C and MATLAB/Simulink.
