Role overview

A partner company is hiring a Staff Engineer (Core & MLOps) to shape foundational infrastructure for large-scale web data products and distributed engineering teams.

The role combines hands-on architecture, technical leadership, mentoring, and cross-functional alignment in a globally distributed, remote-first environment.

Accountabilities

  • Architect control and context planes, advancing registries, SLO enforcement, health-aware routing, automated canary releases, and operational feedback loops.
  • Own the service chassis and golden path, including Java and Python client libraries, workload specifications, Helm charts, and deployment pipelines.
  • Define inter-service contracts, gRPC and Protocol Buffer definitions, API gateway transcoding, versioning, and schema-evolution standards.
  • Operate platform infrastructure across Kubernetes, Terraform, HAProxy/Nginx, Confluent Kafka, billing pipelines, Valkey, and database modernization.
  • Lead architectural strategy through RFDs covering workflow and gateway orchestration, multi-cluster routing, and automated failover.
  • Establish SLOs, SLIs, error budgets, fault isolation, and automated weighted canary deployments.
  • Join shared infrastructure on-call rotations, lead incident post-mortems, and use operational insights to improve the platform.
  • Mentor engineers across squads, review architecture proposals, and establish engineering practices.

Required qualifications

  • 10+ years building scalable distributed backend systems and a track record of creating internal platforms or core libraries adopted across engineering organizations.
  • Advanced Java expertise, including reactive frameworks such as Vert.x or Netty, and strong Python proficiency.
  • Deep gRPC and Protocol Buffers experience, including schema evolution and backward compatibility in mission-critical systems.
  • Production experience with Kubernetes at scale, Terraform, and event-streaming platforms such as Kafka.
  • Experience designing automated telemetry pipelines, materialized views, feature stores, or other production-data feedback systems.
  • Strong reliability engineering background covering SLO/SLI definition, blast-radius analysis, fault tolerance, and service contracts.
  • Exceptional technical writing and clear communication of architectural concepts; ability to drive alignment across teams.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication suited to a globally distributed remote-first environment.

Additional experience

  • Temporal, DBOS, or similar durable execution platform experience is a plus.
  • MLOps experience in model serving, performance monitoring, or production drift detection is advantageous.
  • Zero-trust networking and service-mesh familiarity, including SPIRE, mTLS, Cilium, Istio, or Envoy, is beneficial.
  • Developer tooling experience with CLIs, SDKs, or project generators is a plus.
  • Large-scale web scraping or crawling experience, or relevant distributed-systems and data-extraction open-source contributions, is advantageous.

Workplace

  • The role is described as fully remote and remote-first, with flexible hours and freedom to work from a productive location.

Benefits and environment

  • The posting describes autonomy, organizational trust, global collaboration, conference opportunities, and exposure to open-source, AI, and web data infrastructure.
  • The role can influence platform architecture, engineering standards, and technical strategy across multiple teams.
