Role overview

Senior UX Designer for Johnson Controls’ OpenBlue platform, creating intuitive digital experiences that support smarter, safer, and more sustainable buildings.

The role works with product, engineering, design, and research partners to shape experiences that meet customer needs and support platform objectives.

Design and collaboration

  • Promote user-centricity and apply design thinking across the organization.
  • Collaborate with designers, researchers, and business partners to identify customer needs and design customer-focused solutions.
  • Lead medium- to large-sized projects and small research initiatives.
  • Create workflows, wireframes, prototypes, heuristic evaluations, personas, journey maps, and competitive assessments.
  • Apply research findings and existing data to hypotheses and data-informed design decisions.
  • Work with minimal direction and collaborate with senior teammates and leadership.

Delivery and team support

  • Build and maintain design component libraries and document UI patterns aligned with WCAG standards.
  • Help create AI design patterns that clarify when AI is used, when users should review or confirm outputs, and how AI content is revealed gradually.
  • Present work clearly and share actionable feedback in design critiques.
  • Use analytics to inform project plans and scope, and connect design decisions to customer needs and business value.
  • Coach and mentor junior team members.
  • Work with software developers and engineers to understand technical constraints and feasibility.

Required qualifications

  • Completed a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) or an advanced degree program.
  • 8+ years of knowledge/experience with industry-standard wireframing, graphic design, usability, and/or prototyping software.
  • Proficiency in UX/UI design and methodologies, communication, storytelling, and problem solving.
  • Basic understanding of accessibility guidelines, including WCAG 2.2 AA, and best practices.
  • Experience creating experiences across desktop, mobile web, mobile apps, and enterprise software.
  • Self-motivation, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage time and estimate tasks.
  • Ability to ask insightful questions, actively listen, support teams, and collaborate with teammates across global teams.

Preferred interests

  • Curiosity about how AI tools can support research, ideation, prototyping, and everyday design tasks, with willingness to learn and experiment.

About the platform

OpenBlue is described as a platform supporting digital experiences for smarter, safer, and more sustainable buildings.
