Role overview

Join Expedia's Insurance and Assurance team to build insurance products for travelers.

This is a backend-leaning full-stack role, approximately 70% backend, focused on high-scale distributed systems in fintech and insurance.

The position is available only in Seattle, Washington, and follows a flexible work model requiring office attendance at least three days per week.

The role is not eligible for U.S. immigration sponsorship; relocation assistance is not available.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate high-throughput backend services for insurance and fintech products.
  • Coordinate cross-team initiatives spanning pricing, checkout, booking, servicing, and other systems.
  • Develop scalable APIs, pricing engines, and data models for dynamic and synthetic products.
  • Launch zero-to-one products and iterate after launch across brands and markets.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and testable code emphasizing performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Troubleshoot distributed, high-scale systems.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools such as Copilot or Claude.
  • Join an on-call rotation approximately once per quarter.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field, or equivalent related professional experience.
  • At least 3 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong backend services and API experience in distributed systems.
  • Experience with scalable, high-availability system design.
  • Proficiency in Kotlin or Java.
  • Experience working in AWS.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows or AI/ML-enabled systems is also listed.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in FinTech, InsurTech, or pricing/financial systems at scale.
  • Experience building zero-to-one products or contributing to major feature launches.
  • Experience with cross-domain systems and many upstream or downstream dependencies.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced environments with tight timelines.
  • Understanding of pricing strategies, risk systems, or transactional platforms.
  • Experience improving scalability, reliability, and operational performance.
  • Backend-heavy full-stack capability, including frontend contributions when needed.
  • Strong problem-solving and business/customer impact orientation.

Compensation

  • Seattle total cash range is USD 119,000–166,500, with potential pay up to USD 190,500 based on sustained performance.
