Opportunity

Join Arup's Energy team in Dubai, providing specialist technical expertise on transmission, grid connection and associated renewable-energy infrastructure across the Middle East and Africa.

The role provides technical leadership through feasibility, concept design, FEED and detailed design for substations, overhead lines, underground cables, grid connections and related infrastructure.

Work with multidisciplinary teams serving utilities, developers, investors and EPC contractors through the project lifecycle.

The wider regional team delivers transmission and distribution, substations, interconnection, renewable generation integration, hybrid systems and BESS projects.

Role responsibilities

  • Lead technical design and delivery of transmission, substation and grid-connection projects, including renewable and BESS connections.
  • Develop transmission concepts, single-line diagrams, substation layouts, equipment specifications, overhead-line and underground-cable solutions.
  • Coordinate primary plant, secondary systems, protection and control, civil, structural and telecommunications interfaces.
  • Lead or coordinate power-system studies covering load flow, short-circuit, stability, insulation coordination, earthing and protection.
  • Assess grid-connection requirements for utility-scale solar, wind, hybrid and BESS projects.
  • Ensure designs comply with grid codes, IEC standards and utility requirements.
  • Prepare technical specifications, tender documents, bills of quantities and technical evaluations.
  • Review EPC and OEM designs, calculations, drawings and technical submissions.
  • Provide Owner’s Engineer, Independent Engineer and Lender’s Technical Advisor support through design, construction, testing and commissioning.
  • Interface with utilities, regulators, developers and EPC contractors across Middle East and African markets.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.

Essential and general requirements

  • Extensive experience designing and delivering transmission infrastructure rated 132 kV and above, including substations, overhead lines, underground cables or grid connections.
  • Experience through feasibility, concept design, FEED and detailed design stages.
  • Strong understanding of HV/EHV transmission systems, substations, primary plant, protection and control, overhead lines or cables, and network performance.
  • Power-system study and grid-interconnection experience, including load flow, short-circuit, stability and grid-compliance assessments.
  • Practical experience integrating utility-scale solar, wind, hybrid or BESS projects into transmission networks.
  • Familiarity with Middle East grid codes and utility requirements.
  • Experience leading technical workstreams or serving as Lead Engineer on transmission, substation or grid-connection projects.
  • 8–15 years of relevant experience, primarily in transmission, substations or grid infrastructure, including Middle East project delivery.
  • Strong knowledge of IEC standards, grid codes and regional utility standards; understanding of utility-scale renewables and hybrid systems is highly advantageous.
  • Strong commercial awareness and ability to interface with utilities, developers, investors and EPC contractors.
  • Strong communication, report-writing and client-engagement skills.

Qualifications

  • BEng, BSc, MEng or MSc in Electrical Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status or progress toward professional accreditation is preferred.

Rewards and benefits

  • Benefits include a global profit-share scheme, private pension, medical insurance, life assurance and accident insurance.
  • The Work Unbound policy and flexible working are offered.
