Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Card Ledger & Money Movement)

Role overview

What you'll do

• Own and deliver quarterly team goals, guide engineers through ambiguity, and support them through delivery.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics on ideation, technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs.
• Identify and lead resolution of project, process, technology, or business issues.
• Create and monitor metrics, escalate when needed, and support operations, availability, and on-call work.
• Set or improve code review and design standards and advocate for them through writing and technical talks.
• Develop team talent with feedback, guidance, and example.

What we look for

• 4+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python or Kotlin.
• Experience developing highly available distributed systems using technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Experience planning delivery of significant features or system components with elegant, simple, extensible designs.
• Write high-quality code that is easy for others to understand and use.
• Proficiency making significant changes in large codebases and developing practices and tools to do so safely.
• Proactively seek feedback and take ownership of professional growth.
• Strong verbal and written communication for collaboration with a global engineering team.
• Equivalent practical experience or a bachelor's degree in a related field.

Compensation

• USA Pacific base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT): $195,000–$255,000 per year.
• USA Sapphire base pay range (all other U.S. states): $173,000–$233,000 per year.
• Total compensation may include equity, monthly stipends, and benefits; pay depends on factors including location, experience, and job-related skills.

Workplace

• Affirm is remote-first; most roles can be performed almost anywhere within the country of employment.
