Role overview

Control and optimization

• Design MPC and constrained-optimization controllers for smart-completion wells, including process models, constraints, disturbance estimation, and objectives.
• Build supervisory logic for operating envelopes, equipment limits, mode management, fallback, and safe-state behavior.
• Work with production and reservoir engineers on operating philosophy, controller behavior, and KPIs.

Edge software and deployment

• Own soft-real-time C++/Python edge software on Linux, including containers, deterministic scheduling, watchdogs, state persistence, and remote updates.
• Integrate with control systems using OPC UA, Modbus/TCP, DNP3, or vendor protocols, with verification and change traceability.
• Integrate with AIQ’s IT layer through the IT/OT bridge for model distribution, telemetry, and observability.
• Meet OT cybersecurity requirements and support surveys, FAT/SAT, and cyber approvals.

Verification, delivery, and leadership

• Build and maintain SIL/HIL testing against well and network simulators and physical controllers before live-well use.
• Lead field pilots, commissioning, tuning, monitoring, and handover to operations.
• Establish CI/CD-to-device pipelines, release management, and technical documentation.
• Set technical direction, mentor and review team members, and represent the architecture to operator and AIQ stakeholders.

Required qualifications

• MSc or equivalent in Control Engineering, Robotics, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• At least 8 years building autonomous or mission-critical control software through simulation, HIL, real-hardware deployment, and field validation.
• Strong MPC/optimal-control experience, including state estimation, model identification, and tuning on real plant.
• Expert C++17 or later and Python on Linux, including multithreading and soft-real-time performance optimization.
• Hands-on industrial/field protocols and integration with PLC, DCS, SCADA, or similar hardware.
• Experience with containerized on-device deployment, CI/CD, Git workflows, observability, and SIL/HIL verification.
• Fluent English and ability to document architecture and interfaces and present to varied stakeholders.

Desirable experience

• Oil and gas production exposure, including smart completions, artificial lift, or well/network simulators, or willingness to learn the domain quickly.
• Familiarity with OT cybersecurity, including IEC 62443, DMZ/data-diode architectures, device hardening, and signed software distribution.
• Applied reinforcement learning, learning-based control, NVIDIA Jetson or similar edge platforms, ROS 2/DDS, or safety-critical software leadership.
