In this role

• Design, build, and evolve Java backend services and customer experiences, including system design, APIs, and data modeling.
• Implement maintainable, observable code across services; collaborate with product, design, and partner engineering teams on robust solutions and reusable integrations.
• Own development, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, and incident resolution for backend features and services.
• Use data to prioritize work, validate hypotheses, and optimize performance, reliability, and traveler experience.
• Integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions that improve outcomes.

Minimum qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent related professional experience.
• 8+ years building and operating production backend or full-stack services in a team environment, with substantial Java experience.
• Proven ownership of backend services or components through design, implementation, quality, deployment, and operational health.
• Proficiency in data structures, algorithms, system design (LLD), API design, and data modeling applied in Java systems.
• Hands-on experience with backend web technologies and service architectures such as microservices and RESTful APIs; familiarity with AI-driven tools or workflows.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with multi-service Java architectures, performance and reliability improvements, and high-traffic, latency-sensitive workloads.
• Experience with instrumentation, observability, alerting, or incident response.
• Experience using experimentation, A/B testing, or analytics to inform product and technical decisions.
• Experience integrating AI/ML into backend services and supporting safe AI-tool adoption.

Compensation

• The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $184,500–$258,000, with potential to increase up to $295,000 based on sustained performance.
• Starting pay varies by factors including location, budget, knowledge, skills, and experience.
