Role overview
Senior Network Test Engineer role based in the United Kingdom, focused on network verification, performance testing, troubleshooting, and validation.
Work spans cellular, WiFi, broadband, IP networking, and cloud-connected environments.
The engineer configures test environments, executes tests, analyzes traffic and logs, investigates root causes, and produces verification reports.
Testing and network responsibilities
- Plan and execute verification across telecom, broadband, WiFi, and IP-based networks.
- Perform functional, integration, regression, interoperability, performance, stability, and end-to-end testing.
- Measure throughput, latency, jitter, packet loss, availability, failover, and service continuity.
- Configure and troubleshoot IPv4/IPv6, subnetting, VLANs, DHCP, DNS, NAT, routing, VPNs, firewalls, and LAN/WAN connectivity.
- Configure routers, switches, access points, gateways, VPN endpoints, servers, and test clients.
- Test broadband and WiFi gateways, routers, CPE devices, and access points.
- Support LTE/4G and 5G tests involving mobility, handovers, registration, throughput, and service performance.
- Capture and analyze traffic with Wireshark, tcpdump, iPerf, and related tools.
- Troubleshoot Layer 2–7 issues across configuration, transport, routing, applications, cloud services, and infrastructure.
- Build and maintain repeatable network test environments and testbeds.
Automation, verification, and reporting
- Create test strategies, test plans, test cases, verification procedures, defect reports, root-cause documentation, and final reports.
- Work with engineering, development, network operations, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to reproduce and resolve defects.
- Test network services and applications in AWS and validate hybrid on-premises-to-AWS connectivity.
- Analyze cloud-connected connectivity, latency, routing, DNS, firewall, and access-control issues.
- Work in CI/CD-driven test environments and use Python, Bash, or similar scripting for execution, log processing, configuration, and automation.
- Translate requirements into measurable test cases, acceptance criteria, and performance benchmarks.
- Execute positive, negative, boundary, failover, resiliency, and performance tests.
- Verify network configuration, firmware, software, and infrastructure changes before production; perform regression testing.
- Document defects with logs, packet captures, reproduction steps, and technical evidence; track them through investigation, retesting, and closure.
Key qualifications
- At least five years of network testing, verification, telecommunications testing, or network engineering experience.
- Strong TCP/IP and Layer 2/Layer 3 networking knowledge.
- Hands-on IPv4/IPv6, subnetting, VLANs, routing, DHCP, DNS, NAT, VPN, and firewall experience.
- Network performance testing experience, including throughput, latency, jitter, and packet-loss analysis.
- Strong Wireshark and packet-level troubleshooting experience.
- Experience building and maintaining network test environments and testbeds.
- Experience developing and executing test plans, test cases, regression tests, and verification procedures.
- Structured root-cause analysis across network, infrastructure, and application layers; strong technical reporting and documentation skills.
- Must have the legal right to work in the United Kingdom.
Preferred qualifications
- LTE/5G, WiFi, broadband, CPE, or telecommunications network testing experience.
- AWS networking experience with VPCs, subnets, security groups, route tables, VPNs, and load balancers.
- DevOps or CI/CD experience, including Git, Jenkins, GitLab CI, or Azure DevOps.
- Python or Bash scripting; Docker or Kubernetes exposure.
- Experience with iPerf, tcpdump, traceroute, ping, Nmap, SNMP, syslog, network monitoring, or traffic-generation tools.
- Telecom test platforms such as QXDM/QCAT, TEMS, XCAL, Actix, Keysight, or Spirent.
