EVR describes a focus on responsible resource development, environmental performance, and partnerships with communities and Indigenous Peoples.

Role overview

The Senior Engineer, Geotechnical reports to the Manager, Geological Engineering.

The role supports safe operations at four mine sites, future mining-area investigation, design and permitting, and continuous improvement of geotechnical practices.

The position offers a development path toward becoming a centrally based geotechnical subject matter expert.

Locations and travel

  • The role may be based in the Elk Valley area or Calgary, Alberta, with frequent travel to EVR mine sites.
  • The schedule is a compressed work week with alternating Fridays off.

Key responsibilities

  • Support safe operations and collaborate with site teams on monitoring, performance assessment, and risk management for pit slopes and waste rock dumps.
  • Perform analyses and design for pit slopes and waste rock dumps; assess failures and instabilities to inform future designs.
  • Lead early-stage designs for potential future mining areas and coordinate and review consultants’ detailed, permit-level designs.
  • Help operationalize permitted designs and hand them over to operations teams.
  • Identify, scope, and lead geotechnical practice improvements with central Technical Services and site colleagues.
  • Participate in the geotechnical community of practice; train and mentor students, graduates, and junior-to-intermediate engineers and geoscientists.
  • Participate in and adhere to health and safety programs and policies.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Geological Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering; additional education or certificates are an asset.
  • Registered or immediately eligible for EGBC registration as a P.Eng., or as a P.L.Eng. with an authorized area of practice meeting role requirements.
  • At least seven years of relevant geotechnical experience with open-pit mining operations in coal, metals, or industrial minerals.
  • Proficiency with open-pit and waste-dump geotechnical software, such as Rocscience suite, GeoExplorer, radar monitoring, or MinePlan.
  • Strong communication, organization, collaboration, and interpersonal skills; able to manage multiple tasks and time-sensitive work.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.

Compensation and benefits

  • The stated salary range is CAD 123,000–145,000 per year; the actual offer depends on relevant experience, skills, competencies, and internal equity.
  • Benefits include two annual bonus plans, comprehensive benefits, retirement package, health lifestyle account, and relocation assistance.

Pre-employment requirements

  • Successful candidates must satisfy pre-employment requirements, including a drug screen and three professional references.
  • EVR uses AI tools to assist with reviewing and summarizing candidate information under its recruitment privacy policy.
