Role overview

Senior individual contributor owning data science work end to end, working directly with traders, deal economists, finance, treasury, and founders.

Work focuses on operational deal P&L, costs, and financial transactions; operational data is used as an input to margin analysis.

The work supports reconstruction of deal P&L between points in the deal chain on an agreed, versioned allocation basis.

Scope of work

  • Reconstruct P&L and attribute margin across deal stages, explain deltas, and reproduce P&L as of a historical date.
  • Forecast later-invoiced costs, cost and margin per tonne, demurrage and claims, FX and pricing exposure, working capital, and cashflow.
  • Detect financial anomalies such as duplicate invoices, contract-inconsistent costs, misbookings, off-market related-party pricing, and harmful reallocations.
  • Deliver finance and risk reporting on margin, cost per tonne, exposure, receivables, and cash position using agreed definitions.
  • Translate business questions into research plans and actionable recommendations; handle incomplete and contradictory financial data.

Required experience and skills

  • 7+ years in data science with senior ownership of workstreams; at least two years of delivered oil and gas projects in trading, refining, logistics, storage, or distribution.
  • Oil and gas experience must involve physical hydrocarbon volumes and index-linked pricing; power or utilities experience alone is not sufficient.
  • Strong Python and SQL, forecasting and time-series modeling, and readiness to analyze raw, unfamiliar, or undocumented data.
  • Experience taking models into production and operating them; the posting calls this close to essential.
  • Professional proficiency in Russian and English sufficient to present findings and defend methodology.

Verification and financial rigor

  • Use coding agents with rigorous verification, including row-count and population checks, trusted-number reconciliation, held-out evaluation, and traceability from raw data to reported figures.
  • Reconcile important results to accounting systems, use a versioned and documented method, and explain conclusions to decision-makers.
