About the project

The Department of Political Science at UCL runs the STRIPES project with the Cabinet Office's Evaluation Task Force.

STRIPES supports implementation of transparency recommendations in government evaluation and research on open science practices in government.

The programme is funded by UKRI and builds on the TIGER guidance published as part of HM Treasury's Magenta Book.

Role overview

The Research Fellow will take a leading role, supported by Project Leads, in delivering STRIPES research and implementation activities.

The work engages with government evaluation leads and aims to support transparency in the production and scrutiny of evidence used in public spending.

Responsibilities

  • Map evaluation practices across UK Government departments through interviews with evaluation leads and a large-scale survey of government analysts.
  • Organise and present implementation workshops to develop departmental plans for embedding transparency recommendations.
  • Support one-to-one follow-up as departments implement their plans.
  • Co-author transparency case studies and a policy brief summarising project conclusions.
  • Co-author an academic article on open science practices in UK Government evaluation research using interview and survey data.

About you

  • PhD in Political Science or a related subject; equivalent professional experience in government or public policy institutions may also be considered.
  • Strong understanding of open science practices, including pre-registration, power analyses, open data and code, reporting guidelines, and sensitivity analyses.
  • Working knowledge of quantitative impact evaluation, including randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental approaches, and good working knowledge of UK government.
  • Essential experience conducting interviews with people in political or governmental roles.
  • Self-directed and well organised, with communication and presentation skills suited to a professional audience.
  • Quantitative data analysis skills and an existing network among UK Government evaluation analysts and leads are desirable.

Contract and hours

  • Fixed-term post from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, at 0.5 FTE.
  • Available for immediate start or as soon as possible.

Working arrangements

  • UCL offers hybrid working; the postholder may normally work remotely for up to 100% of the week if they wish.

Salary

  • Grade 7, spinal point 32; £46,261 pro rata per annum.

Application

  • Submit a CV and supporting statement addressing the essential and desirable criteria.
  • Written-work samples and additional supporting information are not requested at this stage.
  • The successful postholder may be required to obtain an ATAS certificate before starting.
