Full Job Posting

Role overview

Join the UCL Division of Biosciences in a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship-funded project led by Dr. Sean Stankowski.

Lead a project strand reconstructing the evolutionary pathway between reproductive modes in Littorina, focusing on the transition from egg-laying to live-bearing.

Research work

  • Design and implement experimental research into the molecular and developmental basis of the reproductive-mode transition.
  • Potential approaches include bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing, in situ hybridisation, chromatin accessibility assays, and proteomics.
  • Work with a research technician and collaborate with project partners at UCL, the Sanger Institute, IST Austria, Gothenburg, and Göttingen.

Candidate requirements

  • A PhD in a relevant field is essential; candidates close to completion may initially be appointed at Research Assistant grade until the award is confirmed.
  • Strong theoretical understanding of molecular and developmental biology.
  • Experience with methods such as single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, in situ hybridisation, differential expression analysis, chromatin accessibility assays, and proteomics.
  • Ability to design and conduct research independently; organisation, creativity, and collaboration.
  • Experience integrating multiple data types is highly desirable; interest in reproductive development and genetics and experience with molluscs are advantageous.

Work arrangement

  • The advert lists a hybrid working type and a full-time working pattern.

Salary and contract

  • The advert lists an open-ended contract of three years, with possibility of extension.
  • Candidates awaiting formal PhD award may initially be appointed at Research Assistant Grade 6B, with a stated salary of £39,107–£42,891 per annum; appointment transfers to Grade 7 after confirmation of the PhD award, with Grade 7 salary backdated to final thesis submission.

Development and benefits

  • Professional development, training courses, conferences, time for personal research interests, and opportunities to visit project partners are offered.
  • Benefits listed include annual leave, pension, cycle-to-work scheme, season-ticket and immigration loans, eligible relocation support, nursery and gym access, enhanced family leave, employee assistance, and discounted medical insurance.
