Full Job Posting

Department and research environment

The position is in the Ion Cyclotron Resonance Program at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.

The NHMFL operates state-of-the-art FT-ICR mass spectrometers and supports research in chemistry, materials science, engineering, geochemistry, biochemistry, and biology.

Current research areas include environmental contaminants, biofuels, proteomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, and mass spectrometry imaging.

Role overview

The ICR Program seeks research faculty with expertise in bioinformatics, computational mass spectrometry, and scientific software development.

The successful candidate will develop algorithms, software tools, and computational workflows for high-resolution mass spectrometry data.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and validate algorithms for high-resolution mass spectrometry data analysis.
  • Support top-down proteomics, de novo sequencing, proteoform characterization, metabolomics, and lipidomics applications.
  • Design computational workflows for data generated by FT-ICR and Orbitrap mass spectrometers.
  • Collaborate with NHMFL staff, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and external users.
  • Publish manuscripts, present at conferences, and contribute to external research funding applications.
  • Maintain software resources and support users with computational aspects of their projects.
  • Establish robust and reproducible data analysis pipelines for the ICR user community.

Required qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computational Biology, Analytical Chemistry, Data Science, or a closely related STEM field.
  • Experience conducting interdisciplinary research in a collaborative environment.
  • Research Faculty I requires 2 to 5 years of additional experience; Research Faculty II or III requires 6 to 9 or 10 or more years, respectively.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Python software development and scientific programming.
  • Ability to independently design, implement, test, and maintain research software, algorithms, and computational workflows.
  • Record of scholarly achievement and experience analyzing large, complex biological datasets.
  • Evidence of computational tool development through publications, public packages, GitHub repositories, or equivalent work.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with mass spectrometry-based proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, or related omics disciplines.
  • Experience with scientific data-analysis algorithms, database searching, and biomolecule identification workflows.
  • Experience applying artificial intelligence, machine learning, graph-based methods, pattern recognition, or statistical modeling to biological data.
  • Experience with de novo sequencing, computational mass spectrometry, high-performance computing, or open-source software development.
  • Familiarity with mass spectrometry data formats and reproducible, well-documented software tools.

Application notes

  • Applications are submitted through the Florida State University Faculty Careers site.
  • The position is advertised open until filled.

Additional conditions

This is a faculty position.
