Project overview

Join the Mechanisms of Health and Disease research group on a Yorkshire MedTech Place Based Impact Acceleration Account-funded proof-of-feasibility project.

Develop and evaluate FlexiSense, a soft 3D-printed sensorised glove for objective assessment of hand function in people with neurological conditions.

The project combines flexible electronics, additive manufacturing, clinical neurology, and MedTech translation to advance a laboratory prototype toward clinical evaluation.

Main duties

  • Optimise soft multimodal sensorised glove manufacture using textile-based additive manufacturing and printed electronics.
  • Develop experimental protocols for sensor performance, reproducibility, interconnect behaviour, and device robustness.
  • Analyse mechanical, electrical, and biosignal-related data and maintain accurate research records.
  • Work with clinicians, clinical engineers, patient contributors, trialists, sponsors, CROs, and commercialisation colleagues.
  • Support user-requirements work, intended-use refinement, market segmentation, sponsor or CRO interviews, and health economics analysis.
  • Maintain equipment, software, and supplies and follow health and safety, CoSHH, and standard operating procedures.
  • Plan experimental work and resources with project members and liaise with the principal investigator and collaborators.

Essential criteria

  • PhD or equivalent experience in bioengineering, electronic or electrical engineering, materials science, biomedical engineering, medical device development, or a related discipline.
  • Proven research ability and evidence of research output.
  • Specialist practical experience in flexible electronics, sensor fabrication, additive manufacturing or 3D printing, printed electronics, or wearable device development.
  • Experience with sensor characterisation, experimental design, and quantitative data analysis.
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge in an interdisciplinary MedTech research environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to translate complex information into accessible language.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research team.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience with wearable biosignal recording, related modalities, or human movement measurement.
  • Experience or interest in MedTech translation, usability, market validation, health economics, regulatory or quality documentation, or stakeholder interviewing.

Technical focus

  • FlexiSense uses textile-based wearable technology with printed multimodal sensors to measure grip force, movement, touch-related responses, and muscle activity.
  • The role applies flexible electronics, additive manufacturing, printed sensors, instrumentation, experimental data analysis, and user-centred device refinement.
  • The project supports translational outputs including commercial segmentation, clinical-trial value analysis, and future procurement considerations.

Contract information

  • The role is full-time and has a six-month duration from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027.
  • The advertised salary range is £38,784 to £41,046.

Benefits

  • Benefits include annual leave, pension, flexible working opportunities, retail discounts, staff networks, development support, and family-friendly policies.
