Research Associate
Role Overview
The Department of Mechanical Engineering seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to investigate fluid dynamics and heat transfer in rotating compressor cavities of gas-turbine engines.
The EPSRC-funded project is conducted with the University of Surrey, Rolls-Royce, and Siemens Energy and aims to advance hydrogen-compatible turbomachinery.
The role involves experimentally studying buoyancy-induced rotating flow in a compressor cavity at low technology readiness levels using new instrumentation and engine-representative conditions.
The research includes fundamental study of boundary-layer transition from laminar to turbulent flow at high Grashof number.
Experiments will be complemented by computational simulation at the University of Surrey to scale results to higher technology readiness levels.
Successful research is intended to improve engine design methods for next-generation hydrogen-compatible engines.
