Principal Engineer

Role Overview

Technical Leadership and Architecture

• Lead analysis, design, development, and delivery of complex enterprise-scale software solutions.
• Architect distributed systems, service interactions, data flows, resiliency patterns, and operational policies.
• Define reference architectures, design patterns, and operational principles such as active-active-active, self-healing, and autoscaling.
• Balance performance, scalability, security, regulatory compliance, cost, and time to market.
• Lead architecture reviews and resolve enterprise-wide technical and regulatory challenges.

Platform and Product Impact

• Collaborate with business and product partners to design and deliver services, products, and bundles.
• Own the end-to-end customer experience across services or platforms.
• Identify reuse opportunities, simplify architectures, and improve consistency and cost-benefit trade-offs.

Organizational Leadership

• Mentor and coach engineers at all levels and lead initiatives that improve engineering craftsmanship.
• Guide planning, estimation, and execution for large-scale complex initiatives.
• Conduct technical interviews and contribute to promotion recommendations.
• Represent the organization through speaking engagements, white papers, and technical blogs.
• Foster collaboration and shared ownership across organizational boundaries.

Technical Proficiencies

• Enterprise system design, distributed systems, advanced design patterns, event-driven architectures, and data-intensive processing.
• Kafka, NATS, MQ, real-time and batch processing, checkpointing, idempotency, windowing, and schema evolution.
• Apache Ignite distributed caching, including data grids, affinity mapping, persistence, eviction, and consistency models.
• Java, microservices, REST/gRPC, Spring, Axon Framework, Go, HTTP/2, streaming, and cloud-native architectures.
• Kubernetes, Docker, Pivotal Cloud Foundry, Jenkins, Git, Maven, Sonar, Gatling, and multiple databases and data stores.
• Secure coding and vulnerability management practices including OWASP, CWE, and SEI CERT.

Qualifications

• Experience designing and delivering high-performance, high-transaction-volume, globally scalable platforms.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a STEM-intensive discipline with relevant software engineering experience.
• Master’s degree in Computer Science or Business and fintech or payments experience are preferred.

• Follow security policies and practices when accessing Mastercard assets, information, and networks.
• Protect the confidentiality and integrity of accessed information.
• Report suspected information security violations or breaches.
• Complete periodic mandatory security training.
