The role ensures accurate coding of documents in accordance with regulator coding guidelines and regulations.
Medical coding duties
- Check and sequence ICD-9, ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, DRG, and other codes for documented diagnoses and procedures.
- Verify final diagnoses and operative procedures stated by physicians; abstract records for secondary complications and comorbid conditions.
- Evaluate documentation consistency and adequacy, ensure diagnoses reflect care provided, and compute correct DRG codes for inpatient cases.
- Train and guide coders and Medical Records Technicians on coding rules and updates.
- Review documentation to assign appropriate Evaluation and Management levels using the correct CPT code.
- Follow HAAD coding guidelines and keep current with coding versions and directives; provide doctors feedback on coding errors.
- Perform other duties assigned within the scope of the role.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health Sciences or a related area and at least two years of coding experience.
- Valid CCA certification from AHIMA or CPC certification from AAPC.
- Computer literacy and MS Office skills.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
- Ability to work constructively with others, coordinate tasks, adapt to changing priorities, and meet deadlines.
Safety and compliance
Comply with occupational safety, infection control, and waste management policies and procedures.
Know emergency and evacuation procedures; report hazards, incidents, near misses, and issues, and assist with risk assessments and incident reports.
Attend applicable safety and infection-control training, mock drills, and awareness programs; use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.
