Role overview

Lead development and evolution of Mastercard’s Sanctions Screening solutions, which help financial institutions assess sanctions risk for payment transactions in real time.

The role is approximately 70% technical leadership and 30% people management, leading a team of seven engineers.

Technical leadership

  • Own the Sanctions Service platform’s technical direction, architecture, and delivery strategy; the platform is built primarily in Java and C++.
  • Lead scalable, reliable, and secure software design and implementation; drive design reviews, code quality, operational readiness, and engineering best practices.
  • Partner with Product, Architecture, Compliance, and Operations to deliver business-critical capabilities.
  • Lead incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement; modernize for scalability, resilience, cloud readiness, and operational efficiency.
  • Serve as the senior technical escalation point for complex engineering and production challenges.

AI and agentic engineering

  • Define and execute a strategy for AI-assisted and agentic engineering across the software development lifecycle.
  • Use AI tools to improve delivery, testing, operational support, documentation, and developer productivity, including requirements elaboration and concept validation.
  • Identify workflow automation opportunities and establish responsible AI guardrails for security, transparency, and human oversight.
  • Encourage experimentation and innovation while maintaining compliance and risk controls.

People leadership

  • Lead and develop a high-performing engineering team; coach employees and conduct career development and performance management discussions.
  • Build an inclusive, accountable, and psychologically safe team culture; partner with recruiting to attract, retain, and develop talent.
  • Plan and prioritize team roadmaps and delivery commitments; establish clear goals, expectations, and ownership.

Required qualifications

  • Proven experience leading software engineering teams and delivering large-scale enterprise software.
  • Strong technical background designing distributed, highly available systems.
  • Ability to balance hands-on technical leadership and people management.
  • Experience managing product roadmaps, business priorities, engineering deliverables, and technical risks.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Experience with Agile software development and modern engineering practices; passion for mentoring engineers and building high-performing teams.

Preferred qualifications

  • Payments, financial services, compliance, fraud, sanctions screening, or risk management experience is a bonus.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools, agentic workflows, or intelligent automation is preferred.
  • Experience operating services in regulated, security-sensitive environments is preferred.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms, DevOps practices, and modern observability tooling is preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.

Success measures

Build a high-performing team with strong engagement, accountability, and technical excellence.

Deliver secure, scalable, reliable Sanctions Service capabilities predictably and adopt AI-enabled engineering practices that improve productivity and delivery quality.

Improve platform resilience, operational efficiency, and customer outcomes while maintaining alignment across engineering, product, compliance, and operations.

Compensation

  • For a role performed in Canada, the successful candidate will be offered competitive pay based on location, experience, and qualifications and may be eligible for a discretionary annual incentive.
  • Vancouver pay range: CAD 127,000–203,000.
