Role overview

Engineering responsibilities

• Define target architecture, module and service boundaries, migration seams, compatibility strategies, and incremental modernization paths.
• Contribute to critical code, prototypes, refactoring, reviews, and production fixes across backend systems.
• Design domain models, ownership boundaries, service contracts, and APIs that shield consumers from legacy storage and implementation details.
• Guide framework and runtime upgrades, dependency modernization, concurrency and lifecycle improvements, and decomposition of tightly coupled code.
• Diagnose and fix root causes involving concurrency, data access, resource contention, failure propagation, and recovery.
• Design persistence, transaction, caching, messaging, and event-consumer patterns that retain historical, reporting, and audit needs.
• Improve testing, code review, static analysis, dependency management, feature controls, secure coding, and production validation.
• Create reusable patterns, reference implementations, libraries, and architecture decisions.
• Coordinate technical priorities and sequenced plans with engineering, product, security, and data teams.
• Apply AI to code comprehension, design, implementation, testing, debugging, documentation, and planning.

Experience and qualifications

• Substantial experience designing, building, operating, and evolving production backend systems, services, APIs, and distributed applications.
• Able to move from architecture into code, configuration, instrumentation, and diagnosis; relevant backend ecosystems include Java/Spring Boot, Golang, or Node/TypeScript.
• Able to define service boundaries, domain ownership, migration strategies, integration patterns, and practical decisions for complex existing systems.
• Production expertise tracing behavior through code, runtime state, database interactions, and dependency flows, then improving correctness, concurrency, performance, and recovery.
• Depth in domain modeling, modular design, dependency management, incremental refactoring, relational databases, SQL, messaging, event consumers, data movement, and caching.
• Strong automated testing, code review, static analysis, dependency health, secure coding, and production validation practices.
• Principal-level technical leadership, including communicating risk in business terms and helping teams make executable decisions.
• Actively identify effective opportunities for AI-assisted engineering.

Bonus experience

• Experience modernizing large complex systems, upgrading runtimes or frameworks, decomposing monoliths, extracting services, or establishing modular boundaries is a bonus.
• Experience with Oracle or other enterprise relational databases, Kafka or similar messaging systems, and complex data migrations or reporting dependencies is a bonus.
• Profiling, runtime instrumentation, concurrency analysis, database-performance diagnosis, and AI coding-agent experience are bonuses.
