Database Engineer

Role overview

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain schemas, data models, and structures for application and reporting needs; develop and optimize SQL queries, procedures, functions, and indexes.
• Monitor performance, troubleshoot bottlenecks, and plan capacity; build and maintain integration, migration, and ETL/ELT processes across sources.
• Implement data validation, integrity, and reconciliation controls; configure and test backups, restoration, replication, and disaster recovery.
• Manage access, permissions, encryption, and audit logging with security teams; support deployments, upgrades, patching, and controlled schema changes.
• Collaborate with developers and analysts on transactional systems, reporting, and analytics; maintain documentation and automate routine administration and monitoring.

Required qualifications and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related discipline.
• At least five years of hands-on database engineering, development, or administration experience.
• Strong expertise in relational databases such as Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or MySQL; advanced SQL, query tuning, indexing, execution plans, and transaction management.
• Experience in database migration, integration, and production support; understanding of backup and recovery, high availability, access control, and data security.
• Experience with cloud-hosted and/or on-premises databases; strong troubleshooting, documentation, and collaboration skills.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with data warehouses, dimensional modeling, and analytical workloads.
• Knowledge of NoSQL databases and scripting with Python, PowerShell, or similar tools.
• Experience supporting multi-tenant enterprise platforms and large datasets; relevant database or cloud certifications.
