Conservation Senior Manager

Job Purpose

Collection Conservation

• Implement the collections care and conservation strategy.
• Day-to-day management of the conservation work program.
• Assist in development and implementation of collections care work programs.
• Undertake conservation and preservation work as part of the conservation work program.
• Advise on implementation and development of collection policies and procedures.
• Provide conservation and maintenance support for all collections.
• Ensure the integrity and security of the collections.

Strategic Planning

• Support development and implementation of a strategic plan for collections care and conservation aligned with the institution's mission.
• Identify opportunities for developing new areas of collections care.
• Monitor and report on collections performance against strategic objectives.

Team Leadership

• Day-to-day management and direction of the Collection Conservation team.
• Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
• Conduct performance evaluations and provide professional development opportunities.

Research and Scholarship

• Encourage and support research and scholarship related to the collections.
• Collaborate with academic and research institutions to promote scholarly use of the collections.
• Publish and present research findings at conferences and in professional journals.

Public Engagement

• Support and implement public programs and exhibitions highlighting the collections.
• Work with education and outreach teams to create engaging educational content for diverse audiences.
• Represent the institution at public and professional events.

Fundraising and Development

• Support the Collections Care Director to identify and pursue funding opportunities.
• Cultivate relationships with donors, sponsors, and other stakeholders.
• Prepare grant applications and funding proposals.

Budget and Financial Management

• Develop and manage the Collections Care budget in support of the department.
• Monitor expenditures and ensure financial accountability for conservation activities.
• Report on financial performance to senior management.

Risk Management & Disaster Recovery

• Support implementation and maintenance of a Disaster Response Plan for the collections.
• Undertake regular auditing of environmental controls to prevent long-term degradation.

Digital Transformation, CMS & Facilities

• Ensure all collection care activities are correctly recorded and documented in the CMS.
• Ensure conservation and collection care staff are trained in CMS use.
• Manage daily operations of the conservation team and facilities to maintain compliance and a safe environment.
• Work with the Collections Care Director to establish long-term storage solutions including off-site facilities.
• Liaise with facilities teams to ensure building infrastructure supports preservation standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Museology, Art History, Archaeology, Library Science, or a Bachelor's degree in science.
• Master's degree in science is preferred.
• Professional Accreditation.
• 7-8 years of experience in the same field.
