About the Department

The Commodities, Oil and Gas team is responsible for the trading, operational execution, risk and strategic management of commodities, crude oil, petroleum products and gas transactions across regional and global markets.

The team manages the full trade lifecycle, from origination, commercial negotiations, contract conclusion and operational and logistics execution and financial settlement.

It brings together trading, market review and intelligence with operations, and back-office expertise to ensure effective risk management, strong governance, and positive commercial performance with a view to increasing the trading footprint of the Group.

The function works closely with Finance, Treasury, Legal, IT, and HR to support sustainable business growth and positioning.

Role Summary

Responsible for identifying, developing and securing new business opportunities, within the crude oil, products and gas sectors.

This role involves strategic planning, relationship building, market analysis, and negotiation to expand the company's presence and revenue in.

Responsibilities

  • **Business Development:**
  • Participate in formulating the strategy and identifying, evaluating, and structuring key transactions to ensure continued financial health and maximum value creation through the entire product life cycle.
  • Transactions may involve alliances, collaborations, mergers and acquisitions, in- and out-licensing initiatives, and other activities.
  • Build, maintain, and expand a network of industry contacts, including suppliers, off-takers, producers, and intermediaries.
  • **Origination & Lead Generation:**
  • Proactively identify and bring in new trading leads, counterparties, and tangible business opportunities to the trading desk.
  • **Needs Assessment:**
  • Uncover emerging issues or needs, identifying potential causes, barriers, and key stakeholders, as well as related issues.
  • **Strategic Partnering:**
  • Manage a significant segment of strategic partnering, ensuring robust partner identification, relationship building, and partnership agreement negotiation.
  • **Stakeholder Engagement:**
  • Develop stakeholder engagement by identifying stakeholders; by finding out their needs, issues, and concerns; and by reacting to these needs, issues, and concerns to support the communication of business information and decisions.
  • Act as a key commercial representative of the business, fostering high-value relationships with external counterparties to secure repeat business.
  • **Market Access:**
  • Gather and communicate real-time, actionable market intelligence, competitor activity, and emerging regional trends to support trading strategies.
  • Build and optimize significant relationships and interactions with external and internal stakeholders, including key decision makers, regulators, public organizations, governmental institutions, insurance companies, providers, professional communities, and customer/client/patient groups.
  • Translate strategy and plans into expanded value creation and access opportunities for the company’s products and portfolio.
  • **WAF Market Penetration:**
  • Leverage existing relationships and regional expertise to unlock and secure new supply and offtake opportunities within the West African (WAF) markets.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in commercial origination, business development, or physical trading within the Oil & Gas sector
  • Proven track record of generating profitable opportunities, supported by a strong industry network (“black book”)
  • Established counterparty network in the West African (WAF) market preferred

Educational Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or a related field.

  • Strong understanding of business models, markets, and regulatory environments
  • Ability to align strategy with client needs and drive execution
  • Skilled in data analysis, market research, and decision-making
  • Strong communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills
  • Proven negotiation, contract management, and conflict resolution abilities
  • Experience in business transformation, change management, and global environments

  • Solid strategic and commercial acumen, with the ability to translate strategy into growth
  • Skilled in market and opportunity analysis, including risk-based prioritisation

  • Experience in negotiation and deal structuring, including partnerships and acquisitions
  • Clear and persuasive communication with the ability to influence decision-making
  • Strong understanding of the Oil & Gas industry and its operating landscape
