Duties & Responsibilities of a Barista
1. Beverage Preparation
- Prepare and serve coffee, tea, and specialty drinks (espresso, cappuccino, latte, etc.)
- Follow standardized recipes and presentation guidelines
- Adjust grind, dose, and extraction for quality consistency
2. Customer Service
- Greet customers warmly and take orders accurately
- Provide recommendations based on customer preferences
- Handle customer inquiries, feedback, and complaints professionally
3. Cash Handling & POS
- Operate the cash register and POS system
- Process payments (cash, card, mobile)
- Maintain accurate transactions and provide correct change
4. Cleanliness & Hygiene
- Keep workstations clean and organized at all times
- Follow food safety and sanitation standards
- Clean coffee machines, tools, and dining areas regularly
5. Equipment Operation
- Operate espresso machines, grinders, and other equipment properly
- Perform basic maintenance (cleaning, backflushing, refilling supplies)
- Report equipment issues or malfunctions
6. Stock & Inventory
- Monitor stock levels of coffee beans, milk, syrups, and supplies
- Restock items as needed during shifts
- Assist with inventory checks and ordering supplies
7. Teamwork
- Work closely with team members to ensure smooth service
- Support colleagues during busy hours
- Communicate clearly with kitchen or service staff if applicable
8. Product Knowledge
- Learn about coffee origins, blends, and brewing methods
- Stay updated on new menu items and promotions
- Educate customers about drinks when needed
9. Upselling & Sales
- Suggest add-ons (pastries, extra shots, flavors)
- Promote seasonal drinks and offers
- Help increase overall sales through excellent service
