Assistant Civil Engineer

Role overview

Project and technical delivery

• Lead technical delivery and coordinate teams on complex, multidisciplinary water and wastewater treatment projects.
• Produce and review technical deliverables, including hydraulic, basic structural, and carbon calculations.
• Prepare outline and detailed civil designs, technical and commercial specifications, drawings, and schedules.
• Prepare site-wide layouts, roads and access plans, and general-arrangement drawings for process units.
• Design underground piping, basic earthworks, and drainage within site boundaries.
• Estimate design work and support regular design and discipline meetings and cross-discipline information sharing.

Quality, safety, and coordination

• Support civil discipline leads in producing safe designs and applying CDM designer responsibilities, standards, and accepted codes of practice.
• Ensure technical work meets standards, specifications, and Minimum Asset Standard requirements; maintain quality and consistency of civil documents.
• Coordinate technical checking and approval with senior engineers, peers, and discipline leads.
• Communicate technical expectations, escalate time, cost, or quality issues, and maintain smooth interfaces across disciplines.
• Understand, manage, and record project design risks and assumptions; promote safety for operators and maintainers.

Candidate requirements

• Demonstrable project-team leadership experience in water-industry projects, a sound technical background, and project-delivery acumen.
• Very good understanding of process units in water and wastewater treatment plants.
• Working knowledge of treatment plants, pumping stations, treatment-plant hydraulics, and gravity mains.
• Basic structural-design knowledge, including flotation checks, bearing-capacity calculations, and sizing structural elements.
• Knowledge of site-wide layouts, roads and access, and process-unit general-arrangement drawings.
• Work experience designing underground piping, basic earthworks, and drainage within site boundaries.
• Technical/design leadership experience for a sizeable team and understanding of design risks and assumptions.

Relevant experience

• Experience delivering design-and-build and client-side projects from feasibility and concept through detailed design and construction is an added advantage.
