Full-Time, Permanent About Austal

At Austal, we’re leaders in advanced maritime engineering and shipbuilding, known for delivering and supporting cutting-edge vessels to customers around the globe. Our innovative designs, high-performance ships, and dedication to quality make us a trusted partner in the maritime industry.

About the Opportunity

The Technical Capture Lead is responsible for identifying, developing, and maturing vessel technology, upgrade, retrofit, and through-life support opportunities that contribute to Austal's growth objectives.

Working across customer engagement, technical solution development, and business growth activities, you will establish strong relationships with customers and industry stakeholders, understand operational and technical challenges, and translate these into viable opportunities for further development. Working closely with Engineering, Product, Commercial, and Delivery teams, you will help shape early solutions, improve the quality and maturity of opportunities entering the capture process, and provide market intelligence to support future technology, capability, and service offerings.

What's Involved

  • Identify and develop vessel technology, upgrade, retrofit, and through-life support opportunities across existing and prospective customers.
  • Engage directly with vessel operators, owners, shipyards, and other stakeholders to understand operational requirements, technical challenges, and emerging customer needs.
  • Assess and technically qualify opportunities, including customer requirements, system condition, potential solutions, timing, and commercial viability.
  • Shape upgrade concepts and technical solutions in collaboration with customers and internal engineering, product, and delivery teams.
  • Develop preliminary scopes, budgetary proposals, presentations, and supporting capture documentation.
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships throughout the early stages of opportunity development.
  • Maintain visibility of developing opportunities and support the effective transition of qualified opportunities into the formal capture process.
  • Provide market and customer intelligence to support product development, technology strategies, and future upgrade and service offerings.

You'll Need

  • Relevant engineering, technical, or trade qualification, or equivalent demonstrated industry experience.
  • Current driver's licence and the ability to undertake domestic and international travel.
  • Strong customer engagement and relationship-building capability.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, investigate, and develop technical opportunities.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to engage technical, operational, and commercial stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate customer requirements and technical challenges into clear, actionable opportunities.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to independently manage multiple developing opportunities.
  • Experience within a marine, engineering, automation, electrical, or other complex technical environment.
  • Sound technical understanding of vessel systems, including system limitations, obsolescence, integration challenges, and upgrade requirements.
  • Experience developing technical scopes, solutions, or proposals in response to customer requirements.
  • Understanding of retrofit, upgrade, service, or through-life support activities.
  • Experience working collaboratively across technical, commercial, and delivery teams to develop customer solutions.

Desirable

  • Experience within shipbuilding, marine systems, vessel operations, or maritime through-life support.
  • Experience in technical sales, business development, capture management, or customer-facing engineering.
  • Knowledge of vessel automation, electrical, control, communications, or related technology systems.
  • Experience developing or delivering vessel upgrades and retrofit solutions.
  • Existing relationships within commercial or defence maritime markets.
  • International customer, shipyard, or vessel experience.

Benefits:

  • The role is home based in the UK, working 40hrs per week whilst at home.
  • Office Equipment and work equipment will be supplied, but working space is the responsibility of the applicant.
  • Opportunities for professional development, training, and career progression.
  • Involvement in cutting-edge projects with global impact.
  • A collaborative and supportive work environment.
