Job Summary
You’ll deliver new product capabilities across our platform, working across the full stack — from database models to UI components — and owning features end-to-end. AI is central to how you’ll work: you’ll use AI-assisted development tools daily to accelerate your output, build AI-powered product experiences for our customers, and help establish the practices that make our team effective in this new operating model.
Responsibilities
- Build and improve APIs, microservices, and frontend experiences that power government agencies at scale
- Own features end-to-end: collaborate with Product and Design to define the problem, build the solution, ship it, and monitor it in production
- Build AI-powered product features — from intelligent data analysis and agent-driven workflows to AI-assisted user experiences that transform how government teams work
- Use AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) as a core part of your workflow to accelerate coding, debugging, and documentation
- Produce clean, well-documented code and conduct thorough reviews of both human-written and AI-generated code, with a sharp eye for the subtle failure modes each produces
- Collaborate across the organization to translate business priorities into shipped features that drive customer success
- Have 10+ years of professional experience building scalable software in an agile environment
- Have strong experience with modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (React or similar) and backend development
- Are comfortable working across the stack — frontend, backend, data layer — and shipping features end-to-end
- Have built heavily utilized enterprise SaaS software
- Actively use AI-assisted development tools and have a feel for when they accelerate you vs. when they lead you astray
- Have experience building AI-powered product features: agents, AI-driven UX, workflow automation, or retrieval systems (direct ML/model training experience not required)
- Have built APIs, designed database models (SQL and NoSQL), and worked with event-driven patterns
- Thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment where new ideas ship daily, staying closely aligned to customer needs and outcomes
- Demonstrated experience working directly with customers to improve product experiences
- A track record of experimenting with new AI tools and bringing effective ones to your team
- Track record of driving team improvement through mentoring and process innovation
- Previous work in govtech, fintech, or regulated SaaS environments
- React · TypeScript · Ember.js · Node.js · GraphQL · REST · PostgreSQL · MongoDB · AWS · Azure · Kubernetes · Docker · GitHub
- A Mission That Matters.
- At OpenGov, public service is personal. We are passionate about our mission to power more effective and accountable government. Government that operates efficiently, adapts to change, and strengthens public trust. Some people say this is boring. We think it’s the core of our democracy.
- Opportunity to Innovate
- The next great wave of innovation is unfolding with AI, and it will impact everything—from the way we work to the way governments interact with their residents. Join a trusted team with the passion, technology, and expertise to drive innovation and bring AI to local government. We’ve touched 2,000 communities so far, and we’re just getting started.
- A Team of Passionate, Driven People

Our global team of 800+ employees is united in our commitment to challenge the status quo. OpenGov is headquartered in San Francisco and has offices in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dubuque, Dallas, and Pune.
