Staff Software Engineer, Compute Platform (Routing)

Role overview

Workplace

• Coinbase is remote-first but not remote-only.
• Teams meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called surges.

Responsibilities

• Own routing infrastructure design, development, and automation for Kubernetes backends.
• Build capabilities using Envoy, Istio, Ambient mesh, and SPIFFE service authentication.
• Improve routing latency, reliability, and performance across production systems.
• Shape the paved-road developer experience with AI-driven tools and processes.
• Partner with Security, Reliability, and Observability teams on platform requirements.

Required skills and experience

• Bring 8+ years of experience in software engineering and infrastructure roles.
• Have 5+ years of hands-on experience with application routing technologies.
• Be proficient in Go, Python, or Java and have shipped production-grade infrastructure services.
• Have scaled backend infrastructure on AWS and understand networking, compute, and container orchestration.
• Have deep production familiarity with Kubernetes, Envoy, Istio, and the wider CNCF ecosystem.
• Independently diagnose complex distributed systems issues and drive them to resolution.
• Use generative AI responsibly with human oversight and apply it to infrastructure workflows.

Compensation

• Annual base salary is $218,025-$256,500 USD, excluding equity and bonus.
• Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and benefits.
