Overview

The Specialist Medical Oncologist is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of patients with cancer.

The role involves delivering evidence-based oncology care, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormonal therapy, and supportive care, while working closely with a multidisciplinary cancer team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Clinical Duties

  • Diagnose and evaluate patients with solid tumors and selected hematological malignancies.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical guidelines and patient needs.
  • Prescribe and supervise chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormonal treatments.
  • Monitor treatment response, toxicity, and disease progression, modifying treatment plans as required.
  • Conduct outpatient consultations, inpatient reviews, and oncology follow-up clinics.
  • Manage cancer-related symptoms and treatment side effects.
  • Coordinate palliative and supportive care services when appropriate.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate medical records.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Participate in tumor boards and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Collaborate with surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, pharmacists, and nursing staff.
  • Ensure integrated and patient-centered cancer care.

Patient & Family Care

  • Explain diagnosis, staging, treatment options, prognosis, and potential side effects to patients and families.
  • Obtain informed consent for oncology treatments.
  • Provide compassionate counseling and emotional support throughout the treatment journey.

Quality & Compliance

  • Adhere to DHA, UAE healthcare regulations, and hospital policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical governance initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control and medication safety standards.

Academic & Research Activities

  • Participate in clinical research, audits, and continuing medical education.
  • Keep current with advances in oncology treatments and technologies.
  • Support teaching and mentoring of junior physicians and healthcare staff where applicable.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Oncology (DM, DNB, Board Certification, CCT, FRCP, or equivalent).
  • Completion of recognized residency and oncology training programs.
  • Board certification or equivalent specialist qualification preferred.

Experience

  • Typically 3–5 years of post-specialization experience in Medical Oncology.
  • Experience in administering and managing systemic cancer therapies.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary oncology care and evidence-based practice.
