Software Engineer

Role overview

Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and deploy scalable solutions for complex business needs; contribute to system design and architecture.
• Design, implement, and maintain production AI features, including RAG systems, vector search, LLM integrations, and agents.
• Use AI-assisted development tools while maintaining code integrity; collaborate across product, design, and engineering.
• Optimize performance, security, and reliability; review code and improve development processes.
• Evaluate emerging LLM and automated-testing technologies and mentor teammates in modern engineering practices.

Required qualifications

• At least 5 years of software engineering experience building scalable, enterprise-grade applications.
• Experience in a fast-paced software startup or scale-up environment.
• Proven experience shipping and operating AI features in a live product.
• Strong JavaScript/TypeScript expertise, specifically the MEAN stack: MongoDB, Express, Angular, and Node.js.
• Fluency with AI-assisted coding tools, automated testing, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure; Docker is specified.
• Candidates must be able to live and work full-time in Canada.

Additional assets

• Relational or NoSQL database experience, vector search, or search indexing is an asset.
• A security-first approach to sensitive corporate data and ability to explain technical and AI trade-offs to non-technical partners are assets.

Workplace

• Athennian describes itself as remote-first; roles based outside its Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver office locations can be remote in Canada.

Compensation

• The stated pay range is CAD 90,000–130,000 per year.
