About Fred Hutch

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent nonprofit organization focused on adult cancer treatment and research into cancer and infectious diseases.

Its research and clinical teams work across multiple care sites and hospital affiliations to pursue discoveries and treatments.

Role overview

The Software Development Engineer II will drive Oncoscape, a production-grade platform for cancer research.

Build intuitive interfaces, scalable backend systems, and analytical methods for high-dimensional data in collaboration with researchers and clinicians.

Own full-stack features from initial development through production in an evolving ecosystem of data pipelines, AWS deployments, and platform integrations.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the design, architecture, and iteration of a production platform supporting clinical and genomic research workflows.
  • Build scalable full-stack applications and interfaces using React and TypeScript for exploration of complex datasets.
  • Design secure, scalable APIs and data models for clinical and genomic data using AWS.
  • Translate scientific needs into product features, analytical tools, and user workflows.
  • Contribute to architecture, roadmap prioritization, and platform strategy.
  • Partner with researchers, clinicians, and engineers to deliver actionable insights.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent education and experience.
  • Three to six years of directly related experience.
  • At least three years building and shipping full-stack applications from zero to production using React, TypeScript, and AWS.
  • At least three years designing and delivering scalable cloud-based systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to architect end-to-end data-intensive systems and make frontend, backend, and data-processing tradeoffs.
  • Experience translating scientific requirements into production software in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; knowledge of relational databases, T-SQL, object-oriented programming, data structures, and algorithms.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with AWS Marketplace and reproducible cloud deployments across multiple tenants.
  • High-dimensional data analysis expertise, including UMAP, PaCMAP, or t-SNE, in oncology or genomics contexts.
  • Familiarity with genomics workflows used in precision oncology and clinical decision-making.

Compensation

  • Annual base salary range is $99,486 to $157,227; offered pay depends on experience and qualifications.

Work arrangement

  • The role offers the opportunity to work partially at the campus and remotely.

Benefits

  • Benefits include medical and vision, dental, flexible spending accounts, life and disability coverage, retirement, family life support, employee assistance, an onsite health clinic, tuition reimbursement, paid vacation and sick leave, holidays, and parental leave.
