Role Summary

The Social Media Journalist will develop and publish engaging and relevant content for The National’s social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn.

This role involves creating compelling videos, carousels and link posts, exploring innovative storytelling formats, and driving engagement across our social media channels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with reporters across the newsroom to identify key content for social media promotion, publishing content daily on all social media platforms, prioritizing according to the news agenda and tailoring story selection and copywriting to suit each platform's audience.
  • Adhere to guidelines for various social media storytelling formats to ensure consistency and impact.
  • Enhance The National’s social media presence by proposing and implementing innovative strategies to increase traffic and engagement across platforms.
  • Opportunity to pitch and write articles, and produce, film, and appear in digital videos, Facebook Live events, and other media formats as desired.
  • Partner with journalists and editors to leverage personal social media accounts for content promotion and traffic generation.
  • Present local and global trends, pitch ideas, and report on social media statistics in daily meetings. Represent the social media team in key company-wide editorial meetings, updating colleagues on trends and upcoming stories.
  • Uphold The National's editorial guidelines, maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, writing quality, and professional conduct to protect the brand’s reputation.

Role Requirements

  • Well-versed in news, journalism, current affairs, and global news.
  • Hands-on experience with publishing tools and SEO methodologies.
  • Proficient in using social media applications and content management systems (CMS).
  • Experienced with key social media platforms, publishing tools, CMS, photo editing software, media design tools, social listening tools, and video file management.
  • Knowledge of and interest in the Middle East and the Arab diaspora.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Video editing skills are a plus
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a newsroom, demonstrating strong digital and editing skills.
  • In-depth technical and practical knowledge of social media platforms.
  • Skilled in tailoring content for various platforms and employing effective storytelling techniques.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Media Studies, International Relations, Politics, History, or a related field preferred.
