Role overview

Develop equipment, software, and systems for LEO Lightspeed user terminals, including modem, antenna, and RF components.

The role covers technical development, validation, and deployment of integrated terminals aligned with system requirements and market use cases.

Candidates outside Ottawa, in Canada or the US, may work remotely with quarterly trips to Ottawa.

Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain user-terminal technical requirements and architecture aligned with system performance goals and operational concepts.
  • Lead definition of user-terminal operational procedures.
  • Coordinate with modem and antenna vendors on architecture, requirements, technical gaps, and risk mitigation.
  • Define interfaces, interface control documents, and component, subsystem, and terminal specifications with engineering and architecture teams.
  • Plan development and deployment for service introduction and long-term scalability across enterprise, maritime, aeronautical, government, and land mobility markets.
  • Collaborate with systems engineering, technical product management, and vendors to integrate terminal functionality and performance with system requirements and roadmaps.
  • Develop and recommend advanced Lightspeed user-terminal solutions; may lead multidisciplinary teams and provide technical guidance.

Education and experience

  • B.Eng. in electrical engineering or computer science; master’s or PhD in electrical engineering or computer science is an asset.
  • Specialization in software engineering or software architecture.
  • 14+ years of satellite systems development and implementation experience.
  • Demonstrated systems engineering experience or knowledge in networking and communications.
  • Experience working with communications vendors to develop products that meet market needs.

Specialized knowledge and abilities

  • Expert knowledge of satellite communications and user-terminal equipment design and implementation.
  • Knowledge of satellite access techniques, modulation, performance trade-offs, and antennas for NGSO satellite tracking.
  • Experience in cloud, edge computing, or mobile networking; familiarity with NGSO spectrum regulation.
  • Knowledge of satellite modems and hub technology, ASIC design and manufacturing, and high-volume terminal production constraints.
  • Understanding of cost targets, product assurance, quality control, and physical-layer satellite communication protocols.
  • Fluent written and spoken English; able to communicate complex topics, work independently, and collaborate with internal and external contacts.
