Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Overseer (Platform)

Role Overview

Workplace

• Coinbase is remote-first but not remote-only; employees gather quarterly for in-person working sessions called surges.

What You Will Do

• Build and scale real-time invariant enforcement systems, including the detection engine, invariant framework, and partner-team onboarding tools.
• Own workstreams from correctness-model design through production operation and ensure fund flows meet integrity guarantees.
• Develop AI-powered predictive consistency models and tools that surface invariant coverage gaps before incidents.
• Collaborate across FinHub, Payments, and Trading to implement correctness contracts for fund flows.
• Mentor junior engineers in distributed systems, correctness, and production operations.

Required Skills and Experience

• 5+ years building and operating large-scale distributed systems in production, with experience in financial systems, payments, reconciliation, or high-reliability transactional infrastructure.
• Backend programming proficiency, such as Go, Ruby, or Python, plus experience with multi-team platform infrastructure, APIs, frameworks, or detection systems.
• Experience owning end-to-end workstreams, designing correctness models, and operating them in production.
• Experience with streaming infrastructure such as Kafka, Flink, Spark, or similar, and distributed stores such as Postgres, DynamoDB, or equivalent.
• Responsible use of generative AI with human oversight to improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Pay

• Annual base salary is $186,065–$218,900 USD, excluding equity and bonus; total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and benefits.
