About This Role

You'll be joining a validated learning model that is actively transforming student outcomes at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform behind this success, scaling rapidly throughout the US and internationally. Students complete their core academics in two hours daily and score in the top national percentiles. The approach is proven. What's missing is someone who thinks constantly about the people using it.

You'll establish design excellence, create the standards, and develop the capability. Your domain includes our learning platform and its companion learning applications, serving diverse audiences both within and outside Alpha.

Consider a five-year-old who hasn't learned to read yet, discovering numbers through a system that must transform novelty into playfulness. Think about a teenager working two grade levels below target, reconstructing self-belief after extended academic struggle—a single unclear interaction could undo that progress. Picture a parent who finally grasps how their child actually learns. That understanding reduces worry and transforms them into capable advocates. Imagine an academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom who requires visibility into progress without information overload. You must comprehend each group sufficiently to make authentically distinct design decisions for each.

Your role centers on the experience layer: investigate each audience with substantive depth, translate your findings into design principles engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-ready outputs that function immediately—not presentation files awaiting interpretation. You collaborate with product leaders who control outcomes and engineers who deploy working software. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. You maintain complete ownership.

You'll employ AI as a productivity multiplier to accelerate iteration and expand coverage, though your professional judgment—not the algorithm's initial output—determines what launches. Primary emphasis remains on our education platform, supplemented by occasional work in additional domains.

What You Will Be Doing

• Conduct user research spanning fundamentally distinct audiences and develop design principles that reflect that understanding
• Establish and sustain design systems embedded within each product's native UI framework, enabling faster engineering delivery and compounding design value rather than creating fragmentation
• Develop functional prototypes enabling product leaders to validate decisions within days rather than weeks
• Evaluate existing products through the user lens: identify experience breakdowns, quantify engagement costs, determine high-impact opportunities
• Establish design culture standards: feedback mechanisms, trade-off evaluation methods, non-negotiable quality benchmarks
• Collaborate with product leaders and engineering teams, challenging requests that degrade user experience

What You Won’t Be Doing

• Determining product strategy; product leaders retain that responsibility, you guarantee the experience enables it
• Creating static presentation files requiring code translation
• Focusing on a single product; your scope encompasses the complete portfolio
• Executing predefined design briefs; you synthesize understanding from ambiguous inputs and begin designing with partial information
• Requesting approval; you possess authority to surface and resolve UX issues independently

Basic Requirements Senior Product Designer key responsibilities

• Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, demonstrating complete ownership from research through production deployment
• Substantial evidence of user empathy and research rigor with audiences distinctly different from yourself
• Established design excellence in interaction and visual design, with portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored decisions rather than standard templates, combined with clearly articulated design philosophy
• Verified AI-native working methods: rapid iteration cycles, discerning judgment, and capacity to critique and improve initial AI-generated output instead of defaulting to acceptance
• Capability to convert designs into functional code leveraging AI tools and contemporary frameworks
• Prepared to construct a design function and culture from inception, not stepping into established systems

Working with us This is a full-time (40 hours per week), long-term position. The position is immediately available and requires entering into an independent contractor agreement with Crossover as a Contractor of Record. The compensation level for this role is $100 USD/hour, which equates to $200,000 USD/year assuming 40 hours per week and 50 weeks per year. The payment period is weekly.
