Senior Java Engineer (Payments)

Role Overview

Accountabilities

• Build, maintain, and optimize enterprise-grade applications using Java and Spring Boot.
• Lead technical architecture including service boundaries, data models, integration patterns, and non-functional requirements.
• Develop and maintain payment platforms and integrations with external systems, APIs, and third-party providers.
• Ensure application performance, availability, security, and regulatory compliance.
• Develop asynchronous processing workflows using Apache Kafka with idempotency and reliable message handling.
• Collaborate with product managers, solution architects, and DevOps engineers on technical solutions.
• Strengthen CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability, and deployment processes.
• Write clean, testable code, lead code reviews, and mentor junior and mid-level engineers.
• Investigate production incidents and implement sustainable fixes.
• Integrate AI coding assistants and large language models into daily development workflows.

Requirements

• At least seven years of professional Java development experience including complex production systems.
• Hands-on payments or fintech experience such as card issuing, acquiring, transaction processing, authorization, settlement, or cross-border payments.
• Strong knowledge of Java 21 or later and Spring Boot for RESTful and event-driven microservices.
• Practical experience with Apache Kafka, asynchronous processing, idempotency, and exactly-once semantics.
• Proficiency with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Hibernate, and JPA.
• Strong experience designing REST APIs, OpenAPI specifications, and third-party integrations.
• Experience with Gradle, Maven, CI/CD, GitHub Actions, Helm, and Terraform.
• Hands-on experience with AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• Strong testing practices with JUnit 5, Mockito, and Testcontainers, plus observability with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Grafana.
• Regular practical use of AI coding assistants and large language models.
• Experience mentoring engineers, leading code reviews, and making architectural decisions.
• Familiarity with ISO 20022, ISO 8583, EMV, and 3-D Secure is an advantage.
