Senior Electrical Design Engineer - Distribution

Role overview

Design responsibilities

• Carry out medium- and low-voltage design to DNO standards and develop open- and closed-ring and radial-feeder supply network solutions.
• Design intake and distribution substation layouts and primary plant and equipment.
• Develop secondary protection and control solutions, including scheme circuit and wiring diagrams.
• Perform cable sizing and produce routing, sectional, and termination drawings.
• Design and model electrical systems and earthing grids, including touch, step, and transfer potential calculations.
• Produce SCADA, auxiliary supply, and COP metering interfaces and standby or backup power changeover solutions.
• Write technical specifications, support equipment selection and procurement, and liaise with suppliers and clients.
• Contribute to network modelling and verification studies, review submissions against client scope, and take part in design reviews.

Requirements

• Degree or relevant qualification in Electrical Engineering.
• Knowledge of British and DNO-specific design standards and power system characteristics.
• Relevant trainee or assistant engineering experience, or a post-degree Graduate Training programme, in an Energy/Power design office or construction environment.
• Ability to collaborate with internal and external parties and write clear, concise documentation.

Desirable experience

• Experience under engineering design governance, preparing pre-construction information, and conducting design risk assessments and reviews; knowledge of CDM regulations.
• Experience in MV and HV cable design.
