Position summary

The Senior Data Engineer supports existing Azure SQL services and a Unified Data & AI-ready Platform built with Databricks, Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 and Power BI Premium.

The role supervises a small team of data and data platform engineers and reports to the Senior Manager, Enterprise Data Platform.

Candidates must be legally authorised to work in the UK.

What you will do

  • Build and maintain production data pipelines and platform components using Databricks, ADLS Gen2 and Bronze/Silver/Gold architecture.
  • Translate approved requirements into dimensional models and queries; develop reusable production code and maintain the SQL-based environment.
  • Support Power BI datasets, reports and dashboards, including optimisation for accuracy, maintainability and performance.
  • Support Power BI Premium tenant administration, lifecycle, governance and performance monitoring.
  • Develop data visualisation methods, views and extracts, including Databricks views feeding Power BI.
  • Embed data quality checks with survey, BI and monitoring and evaluation colleagues; troubleshoot issues.
  • Document ingestion, transformation and modelling logic clearly.
  • Coordinate with platform, technology and field teams to align engineering with platform architecture and governance.
  • Matrix-manage a small engineering team, handle escalations and support regional handovers, follow-the-sun delivery and business-as-usual work.

What you bring

  • Production data pipeline experience, ideally with Databricks or comparable Spark technology and cloud data lake storage.
  • SQL and hands-on dimensional modelling, including star schema or Bronze/Silver/Gold patterns.
  • Experience building BI data layers, ideally Power BI, with performant and governed semantic models and views.
  • Clear technical documentation skills for non-specialist readers.
  • Ability to work through formal requirements, staging and production sign-off gates and coordinate with analysts, survey and field teams.
  • Survey or ODK-style tools, including Survey123 or XLSForms, are desirable.
  • Data governance, catalogues and access control such as Unity Catalog are desirable.
  • Python and PySpark for pipeline development and testing are desirable.
