Role overview

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test and maintain scalable data pipelines and processing solutions.
• Implement secure, efficient and maintainable ingestion and integration patterns across Azure services.
• Develop models for analytical and operational use with analysts and architects; build data flows and SQL transformations, stored procedures and views.
• Contribute to the Azure data platform, including Synapse and layered data architecture where appropriate.
• Improve coding conventions, design patterns and engineering standards across services and pipelines.
• Mentor engineers, review code and pipelines, and guide teams on engineering best practice.
• Diagnose data problems, perform root-cause analysis and implement preventative measures.
• Monitor and optimise pipelines and storage for reliability, performance and cost-effectiveness.

Essential criteria and technical experience

• Experience designing and building pipelines on modern cloud data platforms such as Azure Synapse, Data Factory or Databricks.
• Experience developing performant SQL transformations and ELT patterns and working with relational and/or big data technologies.
• Experience with CI/CD, version control and automated testing, and supporting platforms across environments including production.
• Strong SQL and data transformation skills; proficiency in Azure tools such as ADF, Synapse, Delta Lake or Data Lake Gen2.
• Knowledge of ETL/ELT principles and data integration patterns; infrastructure-as-code, DevOps and monitoring familiarity is also described.
• Python, PySpark or similar language experience is desirable.
• Able to solve complex technical problems, collaborate across disciplines, communicate to varied audiences and ensure data quality.
• Provide technical leadership by guiding design, reviewing code and pipelines, and aligning delivery with agreed standards and architectural guardrails.
