Role overview

Supports inventory management, order fulfilment, and obsolescence control to meet customer and business objectives.

Works with distribution, transportation, retail operations, and merchandising teams to optimize purchasing and movement of food and basic general merchandise.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate purchasing and replenishment to meet service targets and maintain balanced inventory across warehouses and seasonal shipping locations.
  • Manage vendor buying activities, purchase orders, shipment risks, shortages, and delivery delays.
  • Make purchasing decisions based on forecasts, vendor minimums, lead times, promotions, product turnover, and seasonal needs.
  • Monitor vendor service and resolve supply disruptions, stockouts, excess inventory, delayed orders, and shelf-life risks.
  • Balance availability, inventory investment, gross margin, freight costs, and obsolescence; identify slow-moving or misallocated stock and corrective actions.
  • Review replenishment policies, safety stock, order quantities, and vendor minimums to improve turnover and reduce holding costs.
  • Maintain forecasts, vendor parameters, replenishment settings, product information, and delivery details in relevant systems.
  • Allocate inventory for demand and seasonal shipping programs; prepare reports, conduct audits, and identify process improvements.
  • Collaborate with business partners on supply issues, risks, recovery plans, business reviews, and cross-functional improvements.

Desired skills and experience

  • Post-secondary education in supply chain management, business, commerce, or a related discipline, or equivalent education and relevant experience.
  • Substantial hands-on buying or replenishment experience in grocery, general merchandise retail, or a comparable high-volume environment.
  • Strong knowledge of forecasting, replenishment, safety stock, vendor minimums, lead times, promotional demand, turnover, and obsolescence.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookup functions, and large-data analysis; experience with purchasing, inventory, and demand planning systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to translate findings into purchasing decisions.
  • Ability to improve availability, order fill rates, and turnover while reducing stockouts, excess inventory, and obsolescence.
  • Understanding of inventory investment, gross margin, freight costs, and holding costs.
  • A relevant purchasing, supply chain, inventory management, or forecasting designation is an asset; food shelf-life experience is also an asset.
