Rail Operator
Key Skills for This Role
Full Job Posting
What You'll Do
As a Rail Infrastructure Technician, you'll work as part of a 4–6 person crew led by a Rail Infrastructure Superintendent on active and adjacent railroad corridor projects across the country.
Install slope stabilization systems, soil nails, rock anchors, drainage solutions, shotcrete, and grouting to protect rail corridors from landslides, rockfall, scour, and embankment failure
Execute daily safety plans alongside your Superintendent — you are an active participant in keeping your crew safe, not a passive one
Operate and maintain equipment on active jobsites — proper care of tools and machinery is part of the job
Support site organization, material handling, and jobsite logistics
Assist with daily documentation including logs, photos, safety checklists, and compliance records
Respond to emergency callouts — GSI deploys 24/7 and your crew will be part of that response network
Learn from experienced Superintendents and Senior Technicians — GSI builds people, not just projects
What Your Background Gives You
Experience in the field translates directly to this work:
Heavy civil or construction labor experience means you understand jobsite safety, physical demands, equipment awareness, and working as part of a crew under a schedule
Geotechnical construction experience — drilling, shoring, anchoring, grouting, or shotcrete — means you'll be productive quickly and can grow into senior technical responsibilities fast
Railroad or MOW experience means you understand active right-of-way, Roadway Worker Protection, and the discipline required to work safely in live corridor environments — that background is directly applicable and valued here
What You Bring
Required:
Demonstrated experience working on active construction jobsites in heavy civil, geotechnical, railroad, or closely related field environments
A hands-on work ethic and the physical ability to perform demanding outdoor work in varying terrain and conditions
Commitment to safety — you follow the plan, speak up when something isn't right, and look out for the people around you
Clear communication and the ability to take direction and work effectively as part of a crew
Comfort with 100% travel — this is a travel-rotation role and you'll be deployed nationally
Valid driver's license
Ability to pass an extensive background check required for active railroad corridor work
Preferred — but not required to apply:
Prior experience on geotechnical, slope stabilization, drilling, anchoring, grouting, or shotcrete projects
Railroad or MOW field experience and familiarity with Roadway Worker Protection / FRA compliance
Hi-rail certification or experience working from rail-mounted equipment
OSHA 10 or 30 certification
CDL-A
Growth Path
This is not a static labor role. GSI builds its Superintendents and field leaders from within, and the technician ranks are where that starts. High performers advance into:
Senior Rail Infrastructure Technician
Lead Hand / Working Foreman
Rail Infrastructure Superintendent
If you show up, do the work right, and invest in your own growth, GSI will match that investment.
Why Technicians Choose GSI
Ownership. Every GSI employee earns equity in the company — no personal investment required. You're an owner here from day one. Real advancement. The path from technician to Superintendent is well-worn at GSI. We promote from within and the people leading our crews started where you're starting. Work that matters. You're not on a parking lot crew. You're protecting railroad infrastructure and preventing slope failures that endanger communities. Schedule structure. Travel is real — this is 100% travel. But GSI actively works to get you home when you're off. When you're off, you're off. Safety recognized externally. ADSC Safety Award, Association of Geohazard Professionals Safety Recognition, and Gold Shovel Standard certified — because our safety culture is real.
