Job Summary
The Newbuilding Estimator is responsible for developing accurate cost estimates for new vessel construction projects within the shipyard.
This includes assessing technical specifications, analyzing shipbuilding drawings, and preparing detailed budgets for labor, materials, subcontractors, and equipment.
The Estimator plays a key role in competitive bidding, cost control, and project planning.
Estimate Preparation
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for new ship construction projects, including hull, outfitting, machinery, painting, accommodation, and commissioning phases.
Drawing & Specification Review
- Analyze general arrangement drawings, technical specifications, classification requirements, and customer documents to define project scope.
Material Take-Offs
- Perform quantity take-offs and material assessments from 2D/3D design packages.
Vendor & Subcontractor Liaison
- Obtain and evaluate quotations from vendors and subcontractors for key systems such as propulsion, HVAC, and electrical systems.
Labor Costing
- Calculate man-hours based on standard productivity rates and shipyard historical data across various trades (hull, piping, electrical, etc.).
Pricing Strategy
- Collaborate with the commercial team to define pricing strategy, contingency allowances, and profit margins.
Project Risk Identification
- Assess risks and uncertainties in the estimate and propose appropriate mitigation measures or contingency budgets.
Cost Database Management
- Maintain up-to-date records of material costs, labor rates, and productivity metrics from past projects.
Bid Preparation
- Support the preparation of technical and commercial proposals for clients.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or related field.
- 5+ years of estimating experience in a shipyard or marine engineering environment.
- Strong understanding of ship construction processes, materials, and regulatory requirements (IMO, SOLAS, Class rules).
- Familiarity with shipbuilding estimating software and tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Ship Constructor, Excel, ERP systems).
- Good analytical and cost modelling skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities to collaborate with engineering, procurement, and production teams.
