Role overview

The description identifies the role as Senior Energy Optimization & Controls Engineer in Schneider Electric’s Solar & Storage business.

Develops controls, forecasting, and optimization for solar PV, battery storage, EV charging, microgrids, and distributed energy resources.

Designs energy management strategies for embedded controllers, edge devices, and cloud-connected platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Define controls, forecasting, and energy optimization strategies for solar, storage, EV charging, and microgrids.
  • Design EMS algorithms for DER coordination at device, site, and fleet levels.
  • Develop energy arbitrage, demand response and charge reduction, time-of-use optimization, managed EV charging, grid services, and VPP solutions.
  • Forecast solar production, load demand, EV charging, and electricity prices.
  • Apply MPC, scheduling, dispatch, and rule-based control.
  • Model and simulate energy systems, converters, loads, generation, and DER assets with MATLAB, Simulink, and Python.
  • Deploy and maintain applications on embedded Linux and cloud-connected platforms using Docker, Podman, or similar tools.
  • Develop and validate embedded control software with model-based design.
  • Evaluate AI, machine learning, digital twins, DERMS, VPPs, demand flexibility, and grid-edge technologies.
  • Develop requirements, test plans, verification procedures, and validation reports; support HIL, CIL, certification, and field validation.
  • Collaborate with product, firmware, software, systems, cloud, compliance, and power electronics teams.

Required qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls, Energy Systems, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of industry experience in controls, optimization, energy management systems, DERs, or power electronics products.
  • Strong control design, modeling, simulation, and optimization background, including tuning, system identification, supervisory controls, and MPC.
  • Experience with energy management and control platforms such as EMS, HEMS, DERMS, microgrids, inverter controls, DER controllers, or EV charging solutions.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, embedded Linux, containerized environments, and modern software workflows.
  • Understanding of solar PV, BESS, EV charging, microgrids, DERs, grid-interactive converters, and energy optimization.
  • Experience with forecasting, machine learning, AI, or advanced analytics applied to energy.
  • Familiarity with IEEE 1547, IEEE 2030.5, SunSpec, OpenADR, and OCPP; strong communication, collaboration, and technical leadership.

Additional qualifications

  • Agile project environment experience is a plus.
  • HEMS, DERMS, VPPs, utility-scale DER orchestration, grid-forming or grid-following controls, HIL/CIL or Digital Twin validation, and AI applications are additional assets.
  • Relevant publications, patents, or industry presentations are additional assets.

Compensation

  • The stated expected pay range is CAD 91,200–CAD 136,800 per year, including base pay and short-term incentives.

Benefits

  • Benefits include health, dental, vision, disability and life coverage; wellness support; paid holidays and time off; family leave; and employee assistance.
  • Programs include incentive plans, employee share ownership, retirement savings with employer pension match, learning resources, development opportunities, and flexible work arrangements.
  • Program participation and coverage depend on employment status and applicable plan terms, conditions, and eligibility.
