The role

The newly established MyWorld research programme, led by the University of Bristol, is a flagship five-year, £46m R&D programme collaborating with numerous industrial and academic organisations. The MyWorld Creative Technologies Hub is now expanding in line with its mission to grow the West of England’s Creative Industries Cluster with major investments in new facilities and staff at all levels. We are offering a unique opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Perceptually Optimised Video Compression, sponsored by our collaborator, Netflix, in Los Gatos, USA.

What will you be doing?

The appointee will be expected to carry out internationally-leading research linked to the strategic objectives of MyWorld and our collaborators Netflix. Specifically the work will underpin the delivery of future experiences and services, through advanced video compression and energy-efficient coding, optimised according to perceptual, content and network constraints. The focus will be on AI-based architectures and tools for the emerging AoM (AV2) standard. This role involves working in collaboration with experienced researchers from Netflix, with an opportunity to contribute to the design and development of next-generation video coding standards. The post will also support supervision of related PhD project work aligned with the MyWorld Programme.

You should apply if

Suitable candidates will have an e xcellent research track record in v ideo compression and machine learning methods ( or demonstrable potential and positive trajectory for more junior candidates), with indications of internationa l r ecognition for their contributions . They will have excellent project management and research leadership skills or potential. They will be innovative and collaborative, with experience of working with partners across disciplines in academia and industry.

We anticipate that candidates will possess a good honours degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline along with a relevant PhD, or extensive relevant industrial/commercial experience. We expect a high standard of spoken and written English and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Additional information

It is anticipated that interviews will take place on Monday 16 May or Tuesday 17 May 2022.
