Role overview

Support accurate identification, documentation, labelling, mapping, and interpretation of living plant collections in a Botanic Garden environment.

Work with botanists, horticulturists, curators, and technical specialists to keep plant identities and collection information accurate and up to date.

Plant labels and records

  • Create, install, inspect, update, and maintain labels across indoor and outdoor collections, including accurate botanical and accession information.
  • Verify nomenclature and taxonomy using recognised references; audit labels and coordinate correction or replacement of inaccurate, damaged, missing, duplicated, or outdated labels.
  • Keep labels, accession records, databases, maps, and collection-management systems consistent; maintain records of accessions, locations, provenance, movements, replacements, and losses.
  • Support accessioning, deaccessioning, plant inventories, and collection audits.

Mapping, digital tools, and interpretation

  • Maintain plant collection maps and field-verify plant locations; support integration of records with GIS, digital mapping, and collection-management systems.
  • Develop visitor-facing botanical interpretation and translate technical botanical and horticultural information into accessible content.
  • Support digital identification tools, QR-code systems, mobile apps, interactive maps, and digital collection platforms.
  • Conduct quality reviews of physical and digital plant information and maintain data-quality, backup, and version-control practices.

Education and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Sciences, Plant Taxonomy, or a related discipline; postgraduate study is advantageous.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in horticulture, botanical collections, plant identification, education, or technical capacity-building.
  • Strong plant-identification, taxonomy, nomenclature, and classification knowledge, including morphological identification and use of botanical references and taxonomic keys.
  • Proven plant labelling, living-collection documentation, accessioning, provenance, and collection-management experience.
  • Experience with plant databases, electronic records, GIS, mapping, and digital collection-management platforms.

Training and professional skills

  • Experience developing and delivering practical horticulture training and producing training materials, technical guides, manuals, presentations, or educational resources.
  • Experience assessing training needs, evaluating competency, supporting work-based learning, and conducting horticulture workshops, demonstrations, or community programmes.
  • Strong research, information verification, data quality, quality control, technical documentation, organisation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to create accessible visitor-facing content and work collaboratively with technical specialists.
  • Digital plant-identification tools, QR systems, mobile apps, and interactive mapping familiarity is advantageous; botanic-garden or comparable institutional experience is preferred.
  • English and Arabic training or educational delivery experience is preferred.
