Packaging Engineer

Plans and directs activities concerned with design and development of packaging containers for attractive and safe shipping of finished products under varying conditions, such as shock, vibration, compression, temperature, environment, and methods of transportation.

Responsible for understanding Edmund Optics global packaging needs and implementing a long term strategy to satisfy those requirements.

This includes standardizing the packaging used by the factories in addition to packaging of products EO sells to our B2B customers.

Manage new requests from design to production, working with many stake holders including Product Line Managers, Packaging Dept, and the assigned Buyer.

• Design (or redesign) EO’s product packaging to ensure the individually packed components and assemblies are protected and meet all necessary requirements
• Define the process for determining the packaging to be used for each material
• Prepare all designs and testing procedures for new packaging, ensure maintenance of related drawings and bill of materials in the ERP system
• Develop bulk package solutions for optical components that can go from factory (or 3 rd party supplier) to warehouse to customer
• Standardize EO branding and packaging globally, ensuring a cost effective and efficient supply chain
• Design packaging (usually trays) in a timely fashion for EO’s custom products as well as a process for determining when EO should/should not engage in customized solution
• New packaging solutions should focus on sustainability and be environmentally friendly
• Interface with suppliers as it relates to the form, fit, function of specified packaging
• Identify new suppliers, if necessary, to meet EO’s requirements or cost targets
• Recommend efficiency tools and methods to reduce packaging handling time and cost
• Interface with internal stakeholders on various projects to collect packaging requirements, budget, and timelines. Internal Stakeholders could include Project Management, R&D, Purchasing, Product Line Management, Marketing, and Distribution Departments as well as EO factories.
• Domestic and international travel may be required
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested by management

• Packaging design experience with proficiency in Solidworks or other CAD environment
• Understanding of packaging manufacturing processes
• Understanding of various packaging materials and ideally what is compliant with packaging optics to reduce/eliminate potential damage and contamination.
• Ability to read engineering drawings and understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
• Experience with ESD a plus
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Proficient in active listening
• Ability to work with and possibly lead cross departmental teams
• Project management skills or experience a plus
• US Citizenship or permanent residence required

• BS in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Science or equivalent program
• 5 years’ packaging/designing related experience
