Role overview

VolkerStevin seeks an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor with a career pathway toward Commercial Manager.

The role holds commercial responsibility for multiple projects and leads their commercial and contractual delivery, providing direction and oversight to the wider commercial team.

The role reports to the Commercial Manager and requires visits to assigned projects; flexible working arrangements are available.

Tender and pre-construction

  • Review main contract conditions and subcontract packages for commercial risks, scope, and tender suitability; identify value-engineering opportunities and support the bid team.
  • Produce procurement schedules with project leads and use tender handovers to confirm project scope, allowances, and risks.
  • Establish the first profit-and-loss forecast and ensure the project team understands its roles and commercial responsibilities.

Subcontracts and client management

  • Oversee commercial administration of subcontracts, support dispute mitigation, and help ensure packages are let in line with policy and budget.
  • Maintain client relationships and manage expectations while protecting commercial interests; provide a contact for disputes and changes affecting delivery.
  • Provide clients with monthly cash-flow and final-account forecasts.

Commercial team and project closeout

  • Ensure the commercial team complies with policy and performs to standard; manage the team and advise the Commercial Manager when staffing needs change.
  • Develop programme awareness in the site team and monitor warranty, PCG, and bond tracking schedules.
  • Complete post-contract reviews, resolve and finalize main contracts, settle subcontracts, and secure signed final accounts.
  • Archive documentation, ensure post-PC defects are rectified, issue non-compliance notices, and claim retention payments.
  • Retain project responsibility until the defects certificate is issued.

Requirements

  • Adequate experience as a Managing Quantity Surveyor.
  • A quantity surveying degree and relevant experience are essential.
  • Knowledge of NEC contracts and confident leadership and communication skills.
  • An accredited course from RICS, CIOB, or the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineers is ideal.

Workplace and site visits

  • Visits to assigned projects are required; flexible working arrangements are available.

Benefits

  • Benefits include competitive salary, annual leave, private medical care, pension, life assurance, training, flexible working opportunities, and health and wellbeing support.
  • The employer describes its culture as committed to fairness, inclusion, and respect.

Additional conditions

Drugs and alcohol screening is mandatory for all staff.
