Role overview

Lead development and evolution of Mastercard's Sanctions Screening solutions, which help financial institutions assess sanctions risk for payment transactions in real time.

The role combines approximately 70% technical leadership with 30% people management and leads a current team of seven engineers.

Technical leadership

  • Own technical direction, architecture, and delivery strategy for the Sanctions Service platform, built primarily in Java and C++.
  • Lead design and implementation of scalable, reliable, secure software solutions, and drive design reviews, code quality, operational readiness, and engineering best practices.
  • Partner with Product, Architecture, Compliance, and Operations; lead incident response, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
  • Drive modernization for scalability, resilience, cloud readiness, and operational efficiency; act as senior technical escalation point.

AI and agentic engineering

  • Define and execute adoption of AI-assisted and agentic engineering across the software development lifecycle.
  • Use AI tools to improve delivery, testing, operational support, documentation, and developer productivity; automate workflows and reduce operational overhead.
  • Establish responsible AI guardrails and governance, including security, transparency, and human oversight, while maintaining compliance and risk controls.

People leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing software engineering team, including career development and performance management.
  • Partner with recruiting to attract and retain talent and foster an inclusive, accountable, psychologically safe team culture.
  • Plan and prioritize team roadmaps and delivery commitments; establish clear goals, expectations, and ownership.

Required qualifications

  • Experience leading software engineering teams and delivering large-scale enterprise software solutions.
  • Strong technical background designing distributed, highly available systems and ability to balance hands-on technical leadership with people management.
  • Experience managing product roadmaps, business priorities, engineering deliverables, and technical risks.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder-management skills; experience with Agile development and modern engineering practices.
  • Passion for mentoring engineers and building high-performing teams.

Preferred qualifications

  • Payments, financial services, compliance, fraud, sanctions screening, or risk management experience is a bonus.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools, agentic workflows, or intelligent automation is preferred.
  • Experience operating services in regulated, security-sensitive environments is preferred.
  • Cloud platform, DevOps, or modern observability knowledge is preferred.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.

Security responsibilities

Follow security policies, protect the confidentiality and integrity of accessed information, report suspected violations or breaches, and complete mandatory security training.

Compensation

  • For work performed in Canada, the role offers competitive pay based on location, experience, and qualifications and may include a discretionary annual incentive.
  • The stated Vancouver pay range is CAD $127,000–$203,000.
