Junior Embedded Systems Developer

The Role

What You’ll Do

• Write, debug, and test firmware for microcontroller boards such as STM32 and ESP32 under senior-engineer direction.
• Perform bench testing, hardware-in-the-loop validation, and troubleshooting of electronic assemblies and payment terminals; document faults and fixes.
• Use Claude Code to develop firmware, refactor legacy code, generate and maintain tests, and keep documentation current; verify generated work.
• Learn the platform end to end, including schematics, IoT connectivity, cloud integrations, and payment gateway services.
• Document product architectures and grow toward product ownership from prototype through production deployment.
• Follow security requirements for payment-data firmware; senior engineers review relevant changes before release.

What You Bring

• Degree or diploma in Electrical or Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field; alternatively, Computer Science with demonstrated hardware project experience or equivalent hands-on experience.
• Working knowledge of C/C++, microcontrollers such as STM32 or ESP32, and UART, SPI, and I2C.
• Comfort with multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers; basic soldering and rework; ability to read schematics and find signals on a board.
• Hands-on experience with AI coding tools and willingness to use Claude Code as the primary tool. Claude Code experience is a strong advantage; Copilot or Cursor experience is useful background.
• Ability to verify code and AI output on real hardware and set up appropriate tests.
• Clear written documentation and ability to explain hardware problems to software colleagues and software problems to hardware colleagues.
• Include a link to a hardware or firmware project and be prepared to walk through it.

Nice to Have

• Exposure to vending or payment protocols such as MDB, DEX, or EVA-DTS.
• Experience with Claude Code project instructions (CLAUDE.md), hooks, or MCP connections.
• PCB design or layout experience using KiCad, Altium, or similar.
• Familiarity with cellular, Wi-Fi, BLE, or MQTT connectivity.
• Exposure to PCI PTS or secure-firmware practices, or experience with payment terminals or unattended retail equipment.

About WeVend

Compensation

• Compensation is $70,000–$80,000 per year.

Employment and Work Location

• Full-time employment, in-office five days a week at the North York head office.
• Work location is in person.

Interview Process

• The interview begins with a discussion of the candidate’s background and submitted project, followed by a bench exercise and a Claude Code firmware task.
